10.00am - 3.30pm

£55 per person

This workshop is designed to follow on from the Beginners sewing workshop. Or, it could be a stand alone session for those who can already use a machine at a basic level and wish to polish up their skills and technical know-how.

Please make sure that you can, at the very least, wind a bobbin, thread a machine and sew in a straight line unaided. If not, sign up to the Beginners class first!

In this session please bring your preferred method of taking notes and also any of your own kit you may have.

If there is time allowing, we will attempt to cover as many of these as possible.

Hems– we’ll be making practice hems and showing you the professional way to measure, cut and turn a hem. We’ll look at different fabrics like denim, work clothing and special occasion fabrics and the appropriate stitches to use. If you’d like further advice on hems please bring in your own garments and we’ll be able to advise.

De-mystifying sewing patterns– What does all that jargon mean? We’ll show you how to measure and choose which lines to cut. And then how to adapt and lay your pattern to not waste fabric. How to cut properly and how to interpret pattern notches. We have tips and tricks to make your patterns go together nicely and make your sewing experience hassle free.

Basic clothes alterations– This could be a very comprehensive list! However, we’ll cover just the basics. Taking dresses, skirts or trousers in or out at the waist or hips. Using darts. Again, It could be useful to bring some of your own garments to work on which we could use to demonstrate techniques to the class.

Zips– We’ll look at which zip is used where. Invisible zips are inserted in a different way to a lapped zip. We’ll look at invisible and lapped zips.

Sewing machines and equipment are supplied. Please feel free to work on your own machine if you would prefer but please make sure that it is in good working order and don’t forget the pedal!
