Hand Embroidery & Appliqué for Fashion and Clothing
Sunday May 7th.
Bring a packed lunch.
Hand embroidery is everywhere at the moment and it looks so great on clothes, decorating a neckline or as a motif on a denim skirt or linen dress. People are often put off because they think you have to be very neat or a bit specialist. When in fact you need a few basic stitches under your belt and be able to make some good choices when it comes to fabrics and colourways. Although it is time consuming embroidery is very satisfying.
Embroidery grows quicker when combined with machine appliqué. So on this day we will be exploring both techniques as well as working on the Princess pleater, applying transfoil and hand-painting. We’ll also look at applying beads and sequins as well as looking at a bit of basic colour theory and understanding when to judge when a design is finished!
You’ll leave the workshop with a range of samples you can use on any item in your wardrobe, a head full of ideas and a belly full of tea and biscuits.
All materials and equipment are supplied but if you’ve got some favourite bits and bobs to help your work along please bring them.
ABOUT MY CLASSES
Classes are held in my own studio in Northampton. The building itself is in the boot and shoe quarter and was built in 1883. It has housed many different businesses over the years but finally closed in 2006. I moved in in 2010 and following development from a very generous landlord we now have 18 artists spread across 12 studios. Behind our doors you will find Sign-writers, filmmakers, photographers, rubbers clothes makers and painters amongst others. We do have some on site parking in the yard on the side of the building and as long as residents do not park across the gates you can park in the yard.
THE STITCH AND MAKE STUDIO.
I’m very proud of my light filled studio, it’s a wonderful inspiring place to come for a class. We have big tables to cut out on,a comfy lounge area to sit and have tea, lots of books and magazines to read and most materials and equipment will be supplied for the classes. In the summer months you won’t want to go home!
Tea and biscuits will be offered to you on arrival and you will be welcome to poke around the bookshelves and investigate all the nooks and crannies (but no pilfering the fabric!)
